Bringing Comfort, One Misfit at a Time

At Freedom House, children arrive at shelter often experiencing immense stress and uncertainty. These little humans have been uprooted, routines disrupted, and their sense of security shaken. We’re grateful for the “Lovable Misfits,” a truly special gift brought to us by the compassionate heart of Mary Anne.

These aren’t your typical toys. Created to provide comfort in difficult situations, each Lovable Misfit is wonderfully unique, with its own quirky charm. Paired with a soft, comforting blanket, they become instant companions for children. It’s because of Mary Anne’s vision and dedication that children will feel cared for and safe at Freedom House.

The first time Mary Anne stopped by Freedom House with an offering of Lovable Misfits, I instantly fell in love with their googly eyes and fun colors. Then to hear the story from Mary Anne, “that at one time or another, everyone feels like they don’t belong, and these misfits can help others feel less alone.” I knew these adorable stuffies needed to be added to the mix of stuffed animals given out at shelter.

A simple toy can make a world of difference, and a Lovable Misfit helps children know people care about their feelings. As the saying goes, “A room without a teddy bear is like a face without a smile.” The Lovable Misfits are more than just dolls; they’re tangible reminders of comfort and care.

Freedom House has witnessed firsthand the transformative power of these Lovable Misfits. They provide a source of comfort, a friend to hold onto, and a way for children to express their feelings through play. They bring smiles to faces that have been clouded by worry, and they offer a sense of belonging in a place that may initially feel unfamiliar.

We are also incredibly grateful to the Brown County Community Women’s Club, whose members are generously assisting with providing materials and time in the making of these comforting creatures. Their support is invaluable in ensuring that Mary Anne is able to give every child a Lovable Misfit.

The Lovable Misfits are a testament to the power of simple acts of kindness. They remind us that even during hardship, a little bit of comfort can go a long way in healing a child’s heart. Freedom House is grateful for Mary Anne and the Brown County Community Women’s Club who generously care about each child in shelter.
