One month. That’s all it took for Jason’s family to go from stability to having nothing. As a single father of two boys, he built a life many would envy – a good job, a loving home, and evening games of catch in the backyard.
Then came the devastating news: kidney disease. His doctor’s words echoed in his mind – early stages of kidney failure. Just two weeks later another blow: his employer was downsizing, and his position would be eliminated. When his landlord announced another rent increase, Jason’s carefully balanced life completely unraveled. Mounting medical bills, job loss, and unaffordable rent led to eviction. “The hardest part wasn’t losing our home,” Jason recalls. “It was losing my connection with my sons.”
For three months, Jason lived in his vehicle while his sons stayed with their mother. He lost touch with his entire family, his dignity stripped away with each passing day.
These aren’t isolated scenarios – they are the harsh reality for over 200 families in our community seeking shelter and support. At Freedom House Ministries, we are rewriting these narratives, one family at a time.
At Freedom House, Jason found more than emergency shelter. He connected with a Success Coach who helped him develop a comprehensive plan to rebuild his independence. Through financial literacy and workforce coaching, Jason secured employment at a local printing company to pay off medical debt and create a promising future. Most importantly, he rebuilt trust with his ex-wife and sons, working tirelessly to restore their bond. “Freedom House gave us the foundation to start over,” Jason shares. “They believed in me when I struggled to believe in myself.”
Jason’s transformation exemplifies Freedom House’s holistic approach to disrupt the cycle of homelessness. As Brown County’s only shelter exclusively serving families (adults with dependent children), we stand as a pillar of possibility in our community for parents and children facing their darkest hours. Through 24/7 shelter services, basic needs (meals, clothing, and hygiene products), individualized case management, educational programs, workforce coaching and housing navigation, families receive comprehensive care in a time of need. We shelter 16 families at a time, helping parents and children believe in themselves so they can stand on their own.
The community plays a vital role in making success stories like Jason’s possible. On May 8, 2025, Freedom House invites supporters to attend Seeds for Change, our signature garden party at the Green Bay Botanical Garden. This elegant evening features gourmet hors d’oeuvres, themed raffles, a live harpist, and moving testimonies from families who have found their way home through Freedom House’s programs.
Every dollar donated directly supports Freedom House’s shelter services and barrier removal for parents and children working toward stability. Together, we can ensure that more families find their path to permanent housing and renewed hope.
